How to Get to Jungfraujoch

Every journey to Jungfraujoch funnels through the Bernese Oberland to one final railway inside the mountain. The interesting choice — the one that shapes your day — is which of the two routes you ride to reach it.

The two ways up

The Eiger Express leaves from Grindelwald Terminal: a modern tricable gondola that sweeps directly past the Eiger North Face to Eigergletscher in about 15 minutes, where the Jungfrau Railway takes over for the tunnel climb to 3,454 m. It is the fast route, the engineering marvel, and the best window seat in the region — sit facing the wall.

The classic cogwheel climbs from the valley via Kleine Scheidegg, the mountain pass beneath the Eiger–Mönch–Jungfrau wall where trains have staged this ascent since 1912. It is slower and it is the point: the approach unfolds pass by pass, and Kleine Scheidegg itself earns a wander between connections.

Both are covered by the same roundtrip ticket, and the move nearly everyone recommends after doing it once: one route up, the other down. Note the 2026 rule either way — seat reservations are mandatory May–October, both directions, CHF 10.

The approaches, by base

From Interlaken (~2h15 classic, quicker via the Terminal): trains from Interlaken Ost toward Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, then your chosen route. The easiest base by a distance — the Interlaken page covers tour-vs-DIY there.

From Zurich (~3.5 h each way, four legs): Zurich HB → Bern → Interlaken Ost → the valley → the mountain. Doable, but this is where the guided day tour earns its keep — one coach, reservations handled, 4.8/5 from 2,517 travellers.

Timing the mountain

First connections of the morning, whatever your base — the summit is clearest and quietest before midday, and afternoon cloud is the region’s oldest habit. Check the last descents when you arrive at the top; they run earlier than city instincts expect.
